colfontaine

Mixed forest massif located south of Pâturages, between the municipalities of Dour, Blaugies and Sars-la-Bruyère. The site includes wet woodland areas of high ecological value and holds great geological interest due to the juxtaposition of Viséan limestones, Westphalian shales and conglomerates, and Gedinnian psammites.

Like most forest areas in this part of Hainaut, the site plays a significant role in establishing a coherent ecological network within the region. It is considered one of the most beautiful forests in Wallonia representative of the Endymio-Carpinetum (ash-hornbeam woodland), and is reputed to be the only Belgian station of the plant Asarum europaeum (European wild ginger). This forest massif is of primary importance for bird species such as the black woodpecker and the middle spotted woodpecker, especially within the regional context. The kingfisher is present along the streams on the forest edges. Forest ponds in the area provide habitat for the fire salamander and the midwife toad.
