Sonian Forest (Brussels part)

The site is characterized by its broadleaf forest massif and the transitional zones along its edges. The presence of both dry and wet habitats, in a mix of wooded and open areas, results in high plant and animal diversity.
The Sonian Forest covers an extensive area that crosses regional boundaries, connecting the Walloon and Flemish Regions. With a surface area exceeding 4,500 hectares, it is the largest broadleaf forest massif in the Belgian loess region. This ancient forest is best known for its majestic high-stemmed beech stands, mixed woodlands with a rich spring flora, and remarkable alluvial forest communities. The Woluwe Valley and surrounding wooded estates form an important transition between semi-natural forested and open environments.
