Fluvius, the Belgian network operator for electricity and gas in all municipalities of the Flemish region, is also responsible for managing public lighting.
When replacing the old public lighting, Fluvius also takes nature into account. To do this, the company cooperates with Natuur en Bos (ANB). ANB provides the darkness requirement map to Fluvius. Nighttime lighting has significant negative effects on our biodiversity. This ecological darkness requirement map is an indicative map to estimate the impact of existing or planned lighting on biodiversity. The map indicates which areas most need darkness for animals and plants. These are areas that should remain dark or be made dark.
A beautiful example of how nature policy also finds its way into other policy areas through constructive cooperation. This is one of the objectives of the LIFE Belgium for Biodiversity project.
